“one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”
Ephesians 4:6
If God the Father is God, and the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God, how can it be that there is one God? Are we all children of God? These are two of the most intriguing questions we face as believers, especially when we witness to others.
When taken on its own, today’s verse may seem to promote unitarianism (which rejects the doctrine of the Tri-unity of God) and universalism (which teaches that everyone will be saved). But does it?
In today’s verse, Paul gives another basis for the Ephesians’ unity: worshiping the same God who is the Father of all.
Bible teaches that there is one God (Deuteronomy 6:4), and the Hebrew word used for “one” is “echad”, which means “unity” not “singularity.” The same word is used to explain that the husband and wife being “one flesh.” The husband and wife are two different persons but are in unity with each other.
The Bible teaches that God is one in essence, existing in three distinct Persons: Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Father is God, but He is not the Son; the Son is God, but He is not the Father; the Holy Spirit is God, but He is neither the Father nor the Son. While each Person in the Godhead is distinct, they share the same divine nature.
Paul’s fourfold use of the word “all” refers to all believers (the whole passage talks about unity among Christians, to begin with), not “all mankind.” Therefore, this verse does not support universalism.
In conclusion, all believers are children of God because of their personal relationship with the Lord Jesus. They serve the one true God, who is Sovereign in heaven and on earth. They may come from different nations, cultures, backgrounds, and local churches, but they love one another because they are brothers and sisters in Christ.
One body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father—these are seven solid reasons for all Christians to unite and move forward.
