“He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.”

1 John 2:2

Legalists have a way of coming up with ideas that are completely foreign to biblical truth but place unnecessary burdens on people.

In our previous blog, we learned that salvation shines the spotlight on Christ, not us. Here’s another truth about being born again that you should keep in mind.

It’s not about the date; it’s about the Person.

Some have been told, “If you do not know the date you were saved, then you are not saved.” Nothing could be further from the truth. When Scripture gives confidence in our salvation, it does not go back to a date, but to the reality of Christ.

The satisfaction of God’s demands for holiness and righteousness is found in the person and work of Jesus Christ. Jesus, by dying on the cross on our behalf, took away God’s wrath, eliminated our sins and guilt, and restored us to a right relationship with God. Since this work of restoration is worked out by Christ alone, who is eternally holy, our standing with God is permanently established.

How comforting is that? It should give us inexpressible joy, knowing that our salvation is not based on our performance or keeping a record of dates. Jesus lived the life you and I should have. He met every standard God had set for humans to live by. In the climax of His earthly ministry, He willingly gave up His life to pay for our sins. God accepted His sacrifice by raising Him back to life on the third day.

Now, God sees you no longer as an enemy but as one of His children. That is if you turn from your sins and receive the saving message of the Gospel. In other words, if you trust Christ alone, you are forever saved—even if you’re bad at remembering dates.
