4 “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.”
Galatians 4:4-5
Christmas has become a worldwide holiday. In fact, it is celebrated not only by Christians but also by those who consider themselves non-Christians. For the most part, everyone greets us with “Merry Christmas” during this time of year, which makes one wonder, why do we celebrate Christmas, in the first place?
Every Christian knows that the fulfillment of Christ’s earthly mission happened when He died on the Cross and rose again on the third day. That’s where our blessed hope is rooted. That said, we can’t ignore the significance of Christ’s birth as a prelude to His work on the Cross.
One of the best passages that describes the purpose of Christmas is found in one of Paul’s epistles.
In Galatians 4:1-7, Paul contrasts the position of God’s people before Christ’s coming and their current position. He emphasizes the change of status in believers: from being slaves of sin to becoming sons and daughters of God. This change also made them recipients of God’s promises.
Before Jesus came, people were children and slaves to the basic principles, i.e., the pagan festivals honoring false gods. I couldn’t agree more. Before knowing Jesus, we were all slaves to our unbiblical knowledge of God’s existence, Person, and will. We basically came up with our own idea of who God is and what He’s about. This false conviction of God would have led us to an eternity of separation from God.
If Jesus didn’t come as a baby born in Bethlehem, we wouldn’t have the Lamb of God who would sacrifice Himself for our sins. If Jesus didn’t come as a baby, we wouldn’t have any hope of being delivered from our false beliefs. If Jesus didn’t come as a baby, everything we do is pointless and we would still end up lost.
Thankfully, God intervened and put a stop to our confusion and aimlessness. Jesus, the Son of God, came down to earth about 2,000 years ago. This was God’s appointed time for the Gospel to be preached in its entirety and for the history of the world to take a turning point. The world was ripe for harvesting. The Savior of the world has come!
Pursue the Savior today!
