"Praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day, those who were being saved."
Acts 2:47
The Bible has a lot to say about the church. For instance, Christ is the Head of the Church (Ephesians 1:18-23), and the powers of Hades will not overcome it (Matthew 16:18). In today’s verse, we can see that God adds people to the church.
Luke, the writer of Acts, describes the amazing events happening in the early years of the church. Believers are praising God who created this beautiful community.
The second part of the verse tells us that God added new believers to the church daily. The community is growing rapidly. How did this happen? We know that God is responsible for the growth, but what is the church’s role in this multiplication? In previous verses, Luke lists the activities that took place in the community—learning, sharing, fellowshipping, and worshipping. But before all these happened, there was a powerful preaching of the Gospel in 2:14-36.
It is also crucial to note the result of God's work in the believers' lives: they had favor with all the people. The wonderful portrait of a community of believers loving one another and sharing everything they had was a breath of fresh air from all the hate and discrimination found in their society.
True growth takes place when God moves in a community, empowering believers to live selfless lives. When a church learns from the Bible, shares its blessings, cares about the people, and honors God, it has all the prerequisites for multiplication.
