“I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth.”

1 John 2:21

Christianity is logically, reasonably, and coherently true. The Christian faith is not based on a body of opinions created by men; it is founded on God’s word, which is the truth. What we believe is established on verifiable facts. Not only does the Bible prove true, but history and secular literature also affirm its veracity.

One of the most profound and dumbfounding questions one can ever take is “What is truth?” Since Pilate asked this question, people from every generation have tried to provide a definitive answer. But is it possible to know the truth? If so, can we handle the truth?

The Greek word for truth is “aletheia,” which means “to un-hide” or “hiding nothing.” It suggests that the truth is always there, never hidden, and is always open and ready to be discovered. The Hebrew word for truth is “emeth,” which means “firmness” “constancy” and “duration.” It sends a message that truth is enduring, everlasting, and reliable.

But how do we know the truth?

To define truth from a philosophical standpoint, we can say that:

  1. Truth tells it like it is. For example, when it rains, we can know that it is raining because we can see water falling from the sky. Anyone who says it’s raining but there is no liquid precipitation is not telling the truth.
  2. Truth corresponds to facts. It is always backed by verifiable, truthful proof. Truth without a logical basis is false.
  3. Truth matches its object. Opposing ideas cannot be true at the same time and in the same sense. This statement is undeniable. Even those who deny it use it.

In today’s verse, John reminds his readers, who are believers, to begin with, that the reason for his letter is because they know the truth. The Gospel of Christ was preached to them, they have proven it to be accurate, without error, and they believed it. Any teaching that contradicts what they were previously taught is false and should therefore be rejected.

True Christians know the truth as they experience it daily through prayer, Bible study, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. They can detect errors and persevere in the truth. On the other hand, those who swerve from biblical truth believe lies and allow themselves to be blinded by falsehood.

The Truth is God in the flesh, who lived a perfect life, died on the Cross, was resurrected on the third day, and now sits at the right hand of God’s throne. His name is Jesus.
