20 “And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.”

1 John 5:20

Jesus lived in first-century Israel. History affirms His existence. He was born into a poor Jewish family. When He was about 30 years of age, He started His ministry and preached about salvation. He performed countless signs, miracles, and wonders, helping thousands of people. Ultimately, He died on the Cross to save sinners. But He didn’t remain dead because He rose on the third day.

This is how the Bible reports Jesus’ earthly mission. But as early as the first century, people have been denying Jesus’ existence, let alone His death and Resurrection.

Yesterday, we learned that Christians belong to the One who ultimately rules all things.

Today’s verse essentially condenses the entire epistle. It is a climactic proclamation highlighting the Incarnation, which completely debunks the false teachers’ teachings.

The subject of the verse is undoubtedly Jesus, whom John calls:

  • The Son of God
  • true
  • true God
  • and eternal life.

John wants his readers to be clear about the doctrine of Christ. They (including John) know for a fact that Jesus, the Son of God came in the flesh. In fact, John was one of the few men in Jesus’ inner circle, i.e. the disciples. The Son is eternal and existed with the Father before the Incarnation. The Gospel of John calls Jesus “The Truth” and Revelation calls Him “Faithful and true.” He is the only true God who has the power to give eternal life.

The crux of John’s statement is that only through Christ can we be in God. That’s precisely what Jesus said in John 14:6,

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

The whole purpose of this epistle is for us to know and understand that Jesus is the only way to salvation. He is God in the flesh who lived a perfect life and purchased our redemption by dying on the Cross. His death satisfied God’s demands for justice and holiness, allowing Him to offer salvation to anyone who comes to Him in repentance and faith.

My friend, do you believe that Jesus is the Son of God and the only way to heaven?
