5 “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,”

1 Timothy 2:5

If we want to look at things from a straightforward view, we can say that Jesus does two things: He divides and reconnects. People are divided in their opinions of Him. On the other hand, people are reconciled with God through Him.

Why Christmas?

Because we had no hope or a future, our sins have created a great division between us and the eternally holy God. Holy and sinful can never be identical. Because God is holy, He will never condone sin or else He would violate His own holiness. He cannot allow even one sinful person to enter heaven because that would pollute heaven’s purity.

Think of it this way: Would you agree to have someone put organic waste into your drinking water? I don’t think so. So, why would God allow a person with an unclean soul to contaminate His holy dwelling?

This is why God ordained Christmas. Because the gap between God and us was so huge, a bridge had to be established to allow us to come to God. That bridge was Jesus.

Today’s verse is one of the most important statements in the NT. It declares that there is only one God, which is a direct contrast to the belief of many gods in the first century. In this verse, Paul emphasizes the humanity of the Lord Jesus as he calls Him “the mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus.” This doesn’t mean though that Paul is teaching that Jesus is no more than a man, because elsewhere, Paul affirms Jesus’ deity.

A mediator is someone who intervenes between two parties (like a negotiator in a hostage crisis in movies). His purpose is either to make peace and restore friendship or to form a covenant.

In the same way, Jesus acted as the mediator between God and us. But His job was more than just negotiation; it also included restoration.

What this means is that Jesus’ death restored the harmonious relationship between God and human beings, which is something sin had broken in the Garden of Eden. And since Jesus has reconciled us with God, we can now call God “Our Father” as He calls us His children.

Christmas reminds us that Jesus stepped in to make us right with God and keep things that way.
