“Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son.”
1 John 2:22
Jesus is the most unique Person in the history of mankind. In fact, people have differing views about Him. Some think of Him as no more than a teacher; others regard Him as a healer or miracle worker; and still, others consider our Lord as a religious leader. To tell you the truth, they are right, but not completely. Jesus is more than these things; He is God in the flesh, the Savior.
Yesterday we learned that Jesus is the Truth, and everything He said is truthful and reliable. Anyone who rejects His word and teaches the opposite is a liar. This conclusion absolutely makes sense because if Jesus said one thing and somebody else said the opposite, they can’t be both correct. It’s either Jesus is telling the truth or the other person is being forthright. If Jesus is the Truth, then He can’t be a liar.
In today’s verse, John gives us the very meaning of a liar: someone who denies that Jesus is Christ. The Greek term used refers to someone who breaks faith. The title “Christ” is the English word for the Greek “Christos,” which is the equivalent of the Hebrew “Messiah.” It means “Anointed One.” Christ was appointed to accomplish a specific mission of saving sinners from eternity in hell.
Not only is Christ God’s chosen One, but He is also the Son of God.
In his Gospel, John makes it clear that Jesus is the Messiah:
“but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”
John 20:31
Peter also confesses that Jesus bears this title:
“Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Matthew 16:16
Truth be told, the New Testament uses the term “Christos” almost 530 times, and most of these uses are direct references to Jesus of Nazareth. The Bible is clear, Jesus is the Christ and the Son of God. Anyone who contradicts this truth is a liar and antichrist (“against Christ”), and according to John, such a person denies both the Son and the Father. If the antichrist denied only Jesus, why did John declare that the antichrist also rejected the Father? Because Jesus and the Father are one (John 10:30). Take a look at what Jesus said to the Jews:
“For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.”
John 5:22-23
In conclusion, anyone who denies the Person of Christ is a liar because he contradicts The Truth. Not only that, he also denies the Father, who revealed Himself through the Son. Moreover, the one who rejects Jesus is an antichrist and a child of the Devil (John 8:44).
Who is Jesus to you? Is He the Messiah and Son of God? Examine the Bible carefully and make an informed choice. If you’re already a believer, honor Christ, serve Him, and give Him the glory He deserves.
