9 “If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son.”

1 John 5:9

Yesterday, we learned that biblical and historical data show that Jesus Christ is who He claimed to be. Of the three-fold witness we discussed, the witness of the Holy Spirit proves that God affirms Jesus Christ as God in the flesh.

But the witness of God is not limited to the Holy Spirit; God the Father also testifies about Christ, His Son. The Apostle makes a case that if his readers receive the witness of men, they should all the more receive God’s testimony because it is greater. Because of God’s constantly trustworthy nature, He is a greater witness than any human testifier.

This is precisely what Jesus said in one of His contests with the Jews:

37 “And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen,”

John 5:37

God the Father audibly affirmed Christ at least three times: at Jesus’ baptism (Matthew 3), at His Transfiguration (Matthew 17), and after the Triumphal Entry (John 12).

To the Jews, the voice from heaven would have meant God’s approval. That said, these three instances didn’t really change their minds about Christ.

Jesus is, without a doubt, the Son of God. Not only did men and women bear witness to this truth, but more importantly, God the Father Himself—in an audible way—affirmed that Jesus was the Messiah, the Savior of the world. If we are convinced of eyewitness testimonies, we should all the more believe in the testimony of the Creator.
