15 “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.”

Proverbs 12:15

We live in a generation that idolizes victory and achievement. We celebrate people who have made a name for themselves and imagine ourselves in their places.

Everybody wants to succeed—whether in life or ministry—we all want to win. I don’t know of anyone who dreams and plans to fail. In fact, some of the best-selling books or most-viewed online content bear the title “How to.” We want to listen to successful individuals because we want to be where they are.

But are they the only ones from whom we can learn? How about those who have failed? Besides, most, if not all, of the heroes of the faith failed God in one way or another.

The Bible has a lot to say about learning from godly influencers, but at the same time, it also tells us about gaining knowledge from others’ mistakes.

Let’s take today’s verse as an example.

Solomon says that a person without wisdom thinks highly of himself, being convinced that he is “right.” On the other hand, a wise man pays attention to advice—specifically, sound counsel.

How do we know when someone is mature enough? We see their maturity by how well they respond to sensible, good advice. People who are open to reason will acknowledge wisdom and take it, even when they themselves are often asked for advice. They are the ones who are always eager to learn.

Teachability is essential to growth and fruitfulness. As long as we’re open to learning from others, there will always be room for self-improvement. Besides, isn’t that God’s intention for His people—to grow in truth and love and become fruitful? But when we begin to harbor a self-righteous, egocentric character, we rob ourselves of opportunities to become effective witnesses of Christ.

My friend, do you have a teachable spirit?
