"Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,"

Colossians 3:23

Because we serve a holy God, we should strive for excellence.

In this section of Paul’s letter to the believers in Colossae, he gives a set of instructions to slaves, especially concerning their quality standards. They are to accept their positions as slaves and obey their earthly masters in everything. He reminds them that their work is not to be eye service but to do their best for the sake of the Lord.

The word "heartily" comes from a Greek word that means "from the soul." It pictures someone doing his job with great enthusiasm and passion. Displaying an attitude of excellence makes a monumental impact on one's life and can positively influence others.

On the contrary, It is disgraceful for Christians to do their best only when the boss is watching. Keep in mind that God sees everything, and nothing escapes His sight. He judges not only our work but also our hearts. He knows our motives.

Sometimes, we give our best, but it may not be enough for our bosses. While it's possible to be overlooked by our superiors, the Lord will give us what we deserve. We do not seek to be the best because we want people’s acknowledgment. Instead, we excel out of gratitude to our Lord Jesus, who gave up His life for our sake.

As a Christian, you are to demonstrate excellence in the workplace, school, church, and home. Do your best not because people are watching but because you want to please the Lord.
