13 “By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.”

1 John 4:13

Among the three Persons in the Triune God, the Holy Spirit is perhaps the least talked about. But His role in our Christian life is just as important.

Yesterday, we learned that the presence of God becomes more evident when Christians love one another. Today’s blog gives us another evidence of God’s presence: the Holy Spirit.

Verse 13 shows us the reciprocal abiding between God and believers. The Greek term for “abide” means “to remain as one, not to become another or different.” It describes a permanent connection between two persons or things.

In John Chapter 15, Jesus uses the imagery of the vine and the branches, which is perhaps the best way to describe believers’ total dependency on Christ. In this passage, Jesus says “Apart from me, you can do nothing.”

In Paul’s epistle to the Romans, he talks about the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit as an indicator of Christ’s ownership of believers.

9 “You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.”

Romans 8:9

The Holy Spirit enables us to live not in the flesh but in the light of Scripture. To live in the Spirit is the only way a Christian should exist. Otherwise, growth and fruitfulness would be impossible. Moreover, the Holy Spirit’s indwelling presence is a permanent residence; He never leaves. In fact, Paul calls Him both the “guarantee” and “seal” that we belong to God.

In light of this wonderful revelation, how do you ensure you have a healthy relationship with the Holy Spirit?
