As a servant of Christ, you are useful. However, like a jar of clay, you are also breakable. Sometimes you do good and God is glorified; sometimes you stumble and God is dishonored. Everyone succeeds at something and fails at another. It is a fact of life.
The “treasure” Paul talks about refers to the Gospel of salvation through faith in Christ. This treasure is what Christians are entrusted with to communicate to the world.
Paul considers believers, himself included, “jars of clay.” Paul uses the imagery of the compact or clayey soil from which vessels were cast. His point is that believers are mere vessels of the great treasure that saves souls. God’s glory and honor are demonstrated in the Gospel message that we, the communicators of it, should be careful to represent Him well.
The message of Jesus Christ never changes but His messengers do. The Gospel is like a precious gem that sparkles every way in which it is turned. And God entrusted this valuable jewel into the hands of fragile, breakable human beings like you and me.
The privilege of being a herald of the Good News should not only remind us of God’s goodness but also the fact that we are dispensable. God can replace us at any time.
Someone said, “No one should value the frame more than the picture itself, or a gift wrap more than the gift itself.” I couldn’t agree more. It is dangerous and outright disrespectful to put too much emphasis on the messenger and disregard the message itself. Let’s not forget that the Gospel is a life-changing message communicated by imperfect messengers like us.
Unless you and I are broken and yielded to the Holy Spirit, the Gospel of Jesus Christ will not shine forth through us. People will fail to witness the greatness and beauty of the fact that Jesus came down to earth to save sinners.
One day, when you and I are long gone, God will use men and women who will unswervingly serve Him and tell the world about His love. There will always be churches, pastors, preachers, and ministries who will carry on the great task of sharing the Gospel.
But this is our time to make the message of Christ heard. Our unbelieving folks are a good place to start. My fellow imperfect messenger, will you seize the moment and do something great for our Great God?
