6 “Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them:”

Romans 12:6

No matter what we think, the terms "Christian" and "selfish" just don't match.

In our previous blog, we learned that praying for one another is both a duty and an act of love. Let me give you another thing you and I should stop doing:

Not Sharing Your Spiritual Gifts

In case you didn’t know, you have spiritual gift/gifts, which you should use to glorify God and encourage others. The problem is, that many of us fail to discover our gifts, let alone use them.

Whether it’s the spiritual gift of faith, wisdom, teaching, leadership, giving, or any other different gift, we are equipped to be a blessing to the church. God did not give us these gifts for our own benefit. Neither did He bless us with such ability to let it stay undiscovered and untouched.

This may seem hard to accept, but it’s true: if we don’t share our spiritual gifts—that is, if we don’t serve in the church— we are being selfish. Let’s keep in mind that we are part of one body and that we belong to one another.

Let’s take it from today’s verse.

Paul speaks to the Roman church and encourages them to use their spiritual gifts to benefit one another. He points out that these gifts are given according to God’s grace, and distributed to believers as determined by the Holy Spirit. But more than just the gifts, God also gives the strength and opportunities to use these supernatural enablements.

The same can be said of today’s church. Each of us is blessed with at least one spiritual gift that we need to unearth and utilize for the benefit of the church and the glory of God. To not do this would be a disservice to both God and our fellow believers.

Let’s keep in mind that the church is a beautiful community of imperfect individuals using their God-given gifts to help one another and give glory to God. When we use our gifts, we eliminate selfishness and contribute to the health of the church. When we look at things from God’s point of view, serving proves we’re a part of the family, not strangers.
