4 “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

Revelation 21:4

Without Christ, we consider death the most terrifying thing. That's why when we lose someone, it gives us the greatest sorrow. But if we put our trust in Jesus Christ, we don't have to give in to despair but look forward to eternity.

In our previous blog, we said that for believers, death is not something to fear but something to look forward to. Here’s another reason why Christians should not fear the end of earthly life:

Death causes sorrow only in this life.

In the first eight verses of Revelation 8, John describes the new heaven and the new earth. In this new world, there is no longer the presence of evil and all the pain associated with life on earth.

Verse 4 is perhaps one of the most dramatic parts of the Bible because it deals with the emotional and physical struggles of human life.

What makes it particularly touching is that Jesus Himself will wipe away His people’s tears. However, this term does not suggest that Jesus will literally touch our faces and wipe away our tears. Rather, it is a poetic way of saying there won’t be tears in heaven. Likewise, there will no longer be death, crying, or mourning. In other words, heaven will be our perfect home where our hearts will be safe and filled with joy!

Therefore, tears will only flow from our eyes in this life. In heaven, there will no longer be reason for grief or sorrow because our deepest desires will be satisfied in the very presence of God.

When life is smooth and easy, we may not appreciate this promise as when we live in the midst of danger and loss. When we think of the original readers of the New Testament, they needed a promise that went beyond their lifetimes. Christians were severely persecuted, some of them were even murdered for their faith in Christ. But they considered standing for Christ more important than their earthly safety. They knew that even if they died defending Christ, they would be welcomed in heaven just moments later. They were convinced that the Lord Jesus was worth fighting for.

We can have the same assurance. Why? Because the God who promised them eternal life is the same God who tells us today:

25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.”

John 11:25-26

I encourage you to look past the fear of the future. If your faith is rooted in Christ, you have nothing to worry about.
