19 “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:19

Historically, most Christians belong to the low-middle income class. That’s very true of my country, the Philippines, which is predominantly Catholic. Because of our insufficiency, many of us have every reason to trust God for our needs. What biblical promise can we hold on to avoid worrying about tomorrow?

We have been talking about overcoming worries. In our last blog, we mentioned that our faith connects us to God’s grace and sovereign power. Let me give you another biblical truth to ponder:

God provides.

We learned that part of the meaning of the term “exalt” is to lift up in happiness. Our worries rob us of joy. Instead of focusing on God’s ability to provide, we emphasize the magnitude of our problems. But God wants us to give Him all of our cares—and He doesn’t only mean the hardships we are facing today. He also refers to our past and future worries. Neither does He want us to entrust only the big things to Him while we’re dealing with the small ones ourselves. What He wants is that as soon as a burden arises, we must surrender it to the Lord.

Peter had several firsthand experiences of God’s provision. He experienced a miraculous catch of fish (twice), the payment of his temple tax via the mouth of a fish, walking on the water, healing Malchus’ right ear, and being delivered from prison. Peter had a long list of God’s faithfulness and provision.

In the same way, God proves His goodness to us every day. But His faithfulness is best experienced when we trust Him with our cares. Worry contradicts faith, and the Bible tells us that it is impossible to please God without trusting Him. His timeline may not be the same as ours, but He will surely deliver us when the time is right.

Scripture assures us that God will meet our every need.

Today’s verse shows Paul’s certainty of God’s help to the Philippian believers. Since they supported Paul in his time of need, God will supply (plēroō, to cause to abound) their needs. The Greek term informs us that the Philippians’ gift to Paul was generous. Despite their poverty, they managed to collect a rich offering and gave it to the struggling Apostle.

In the same way, God guarantees both our material and spiritual needs will be met. Our relationship with Christ gives us the privilege of being on the receiving end of God’s provision. If we put our trust in Him, He will make sure that we have what we need when we need it.

Knowing that our God provides gives us an added layer of confidence because we know He is not sitting idle. Instead, He works in the background and makes a way to help us in our times of need. No need will be left unmet because Scripture promises that our every need will be taken care of.
