“so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.”
Romans 12:5
In Romans 12, Paul transitions from discussing rich theological truths to explaining in detail the practical applications of those teachings. He tells the Romans that the church is the collective group of believers in Christ. According to Paul, the church can be likened to a human body, which has various parts with differing functions.
The Apostle explains that each member functions to serve the body, not the other way around. In other words, members should think about what they can do for the church, not what the church can do for them.
In an age of consumerism like what we have these days, thinking about the benefit of others may not come naturally because culture teaches us to think, “what’s in it for me?” instead of “how can I help?”
We are the body of Christ where He is the Head. We are the physical representation of the Lord here on earth. We are the body through which Jesus Christ demonstrates His life to the world. We are bestowed with various spiritual gifts and have every spiritual resource to help build up the church, not tear it down.
If you have committed your life to Christ, you are a part of the body of Christ. God didn’t call you to exist outside of the Church. He called you to unite with the other members of the body, and together we serve one another in love. Therefore, support the Lord’s ministry by serving in your local church. And remember that though we are many parts, we are one body.
