“whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.”
1 John 2:6
In today’s verse, John gives us an idea of what a true believer looks like: he abides in Christ. The word “abide” means “to remain.” Staying around proves a person’s faith. A true believer maintains a healthy, intimate relationship with Jesus Christ, the Vine. The vine-branch relationship in John 15 pictures what happens between Jesus and a Christian.
Let’s take Peter as an example. His faith was far from perfect, but he was authentic. He may have denied Christ three times, but repented of his sins, served God unreservedly, and died as a martyr.
A true Christian patterns his life before Christ. He may not be as perfectly sinless as Christ was, but his continuing fellowship with the Lord makes him more and more like Christ.
A Christian is more Christ-like today than yesterday. There is progressive growth in right living, which is proof of true saving faith. There is a growing desire to study God’s word, an increasing frequency and maturity of personal prayer and quiet time, and sacrificial service to the church.
Jesus’ life on earth is the prototype for Christian living. However, it is a life that requires the power that comes from the Holy Spirit. Therefore, our job is to yield to Him and allow Him to produce a Christ-like life in us.
