6 “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,”

1 Peter 5:6

If you have been a Christian for quite some time, you probably understand that being one does not mean the absence of trials and hardship. And sometimes, our problems can overwhelm us to the point where we struggle to overcome our worries.

In this series, I would like to present a few ways why you should entrust your worries unto the Lord.

In Peter’s first epistle, he encourages the dispersed believers who are suffering from mistreatment. But in the midst of their dilemma, he emphasizes the importance of obedience. He tells his readers to submit to the government, the slaves to their masters, and the wives to their husbands. This time, he commands them to submit to God and each other.

Learning humility was critical for Peter’s readers because they were living in an age when being a Christian meant being open to the world’s hostility. Life was not easy, and people were harsh on them. Some of them were even arrested and killed for standing up for Christ. But despite all the hate, Peter admonished them to be humble.

Peter tells believers to humble themselves before God. They should put away their own interests cheerfully and work to achieve God’s purpose for them. To humble oneself before God could mean:

  • to accept the lowest and most menial tasks for Jesus’ sake
  • to accept our inability to achieve anything outside of God’s help
  • to accept to not be recognized by men.

Peter’s admonition carries over to our time. In fact, his message is timeless—it is helpful for Christians of all generations. Humility plays an important in maintaining a good testimony. Deciding to follow Christ essentially makes us Satan’s targets. Throughout our lives, we might face adversities that could awaken our pride. But in such situations, we must remember how the Lord Jesus handled affliction: with grace and humility. May we follow His lead.
