13 “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.”

1 John 5:13

Contrary to the belief of many that it is impossible to know whether a person is saved or not, the Bible is crystal clear, telling us that salvation is knowable. In other words, we can determine whether or not we are going to heaven. But how?

Last week, we started a new miniseries that talks about things we can do when we doubt our salvation. In our previous post, we learned that The assurance of our salvation is ratified by the very word of God.

Here’s another spiritual nugget to consider.

Salvation is knowable.

Today’s verse shows John’s purpose for writing his first epistle: for his readers to believe in Jesus and have eternal life. He wants them to have assurance that their faith is not in vain.

John was one of the Apostles, a witness who had firsthand experiences of the Lord’s life, ministry, death, and resurrection. What this means is that he is a reliable source of knowledge about Jesus Christ. He only wrote what he saw and heard, and died defending that truth.

He challenges his readers to examine the evidence found in his letter and see for themselves that Jesus is Christ. Why do this? Because the false teachers of his time claimed special “knowledge” of God but lived a life contrary to their profession. So, John counters with a series of tests by which true conversion is to be determined. These tests include walking in the light, obeying God’s commands, loving fellow believers, commitment to a church community, and doing what is right. These marks are only made possible when a person receives God’s witness to Jesus Christ, the only source of eternal life.

The Bible presents historical documentation of the reality of the existence and ministry of Jesus Christ. His life and death were not a mystery. They were written for us to know who He is and what He’s done.

If you believe that He is the Son of God who put on human flesh, lived a perfect life, died on the Cross for your sins, and rose on the third day, you have eternal life.

Moreover, this faith in Christ results in a life of obedience to God and love for fellow Christians. The Holy Spirit produces this love in us. Therefore, knowing you are saved should not be a mystery. The Bible gives us clear indications of whether or not we possess eternal life.

The question is: how certain are you that you are heavenbound?
