2 “By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments.”

1 John 5:2

Saying that we love God is more than mere words. It should be seen in how we relate to fellow believers as well as those who are not in the faith. All of this stems from a heart that desires to obey Jesus' commandments.

Last week, we started a new miniseries that talks about things we can do when we doubt our salvation. In our previous post, we learned that salvation involves noticeable changes in one’s life.

Here’s another truth about salvation you need to know.

Salvation leads to a desire to keep Jesus’ commands.

In the First Epistle of John, the Bible talks about knowing whether or not people belong to Christ. In today’s verse, John says that loving God and obeying His commandments prove that believers’ love for one another is true and godly. This love also provides evidence of genuine salvation.

Those who are being ruled by God have a desire to do what pleases God. It is their response to Jesus’ statement:

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”

John 14:15

Salvation starts and continues with love. It all began when God decided to love us, and it carries on as we show our love for Him and our neighbor.

Jesus made it clear to the disciples that their love for one another is the distinguishing mark of their relationship with Him. The same thing is expected of us.

Keeping Jesus’ commands means putting Him first, following His lifestyle, and following His model of love. Our desire to be more like Jesus is an unmistakable proof of true conversion.

Conclusion

God doesn’t want you to be left wondering whether you’re saved or not. Instead, He wants you to be fully convinced of who Jesus is and what He’s done. More importantly, He wants you to follow in His footsteps and allow your faith to grow day after day.
