6 “For I the Lord do not change;”

Malachi 3:6

For the most part, we want to believe that our opinions are set in stone, especially when we're presented with something new to our ears. But the fact of the matter is that we are prone to changing our minds (just watch politicians switch allegiances and see what I mean). We base our choices on what we want now, and when the situation changes, so do our decisions.

Our last blog reminded us that the Bible remains relevant today because it reveals what really is in our hearts. Here’s another truth worth pondering:

God doesn’t change.

The Bible portrays God as unchanging and eternal.

Today’s verse declares the immutable nature of God, which ultimately preserves people (Israel) from destruction. God keeps His promise regardless of people’s unfaithfulness. In this passage, God guarantees Israel’s preservation.

The Book of Malachi was written while the nation of Israel was under Babylonian control. The people were allowed to go back to their homeland and rebuild the Temple. However, they were still subjected to a pagan nation—in addition to their poor economic situation. The whole book reminds God’s people of the Lord’s faithfulness to Israel, in spite of their lack of loyalty to Him.

God is unchanging. As someone wrote, “It is impossible for God’s character to undergo any mutation. His power cannot be augmented or diminished. What this means is that God never learns or forgets. He remains the same forever and ever.”

Since God does not change, He will always be righteous and just. He will not lower His standards to meet our tastes. Neither is He an impersonal, distant deity. Rather, He is actively involved in our lives and cares about our souls. Moreover, we can’t willfully disobey Him and blame Him for our misery. But since He is forever good, He is willing to bring our suffering to an end if we come to Him in repentance and faith.

Since God does not change, His promises stand. Therefore, we can keep reading the Bible, knowing that God is faithful and fulfills His promises—whether they speak of His blessings or judgment.
