“Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”
Hebrews 10:25
Going to church seems like an optional thing for some believers today. What does the Bible say about it?
The writer of the book of Hebrews addresses the problem of people neglecting their meetings and depriving others of fellowship and encouragement. He tells them to not fail to meet with other Christians. The Greek word used here refers to “an abandonment or forsaking”, which suggests that they have completely abandoned the Christian faith and defaulted to Judaism.
The writer gives the reason why they should all the more strive to meet with other believers: to encourage one another, especially since the Day is drawing near. The word “Day” could refer to the impending destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. or the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. These Jews were slipping back to the ceremonies and rituals of Judaism to avoid persecution.
What About 21st-Century Christians?
We must understand the Great Commandment: to love God and to love people. Church gatherings, in Jesus’ Name, are an opportunity for us to demonstrate our love for God and concern for other believers.
When we skip church services, we deprive others of encouragement. As a pastor of a local church, I feel encouraged when people come and get involved. The mere presence of committed believers gives me great joy. If people participate in church ministries, that joy is doubled!
Some people say, “We don’t need to go to church. We’re saved anyway. Missing a service or two shouldn’t be a problem.” My friend, if you think this way, let me tell you that it may not bother you, but your absence does bother other believers, especially your pastor. We need each other to start a fellowship. What if all of us thought the same way? How can there be a fellowship?
God designed the church not only as a place where we can learn and benefit from its services but also as a place where we can show genuine concern for others. We need to stay in fellowship with each other to strengthen one another. One thing’s for sure: our absence impedes that mission.
