“And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
Acts 4:12
In our last blog, we said that Jesus is both divine and human. Both of His natures are essential to our salvation.
Let’s move on to our third core Christian belief.
Salvation is found in Christ alone.
Contrary to the popular belief that all religions lead to the same God and everyone will ultimately be saved, Christianity says otherwise. During Jesus’ three-year earthly ministry, He repeatedly said that only through Him could people be saved.
His disciples said the same thing. In our verse of the day, Peter is being questioned by the religious leaders of Israel. Previously, God used him and John to heal a crippled man (chapter 3) and preach about Jesus. While their message captivated the people, it irritated the Pharisees, priests, and scribes, which led to the arrest of the two disciples.
The religious elite gathered together and asked Peter, “By what power or name did you do this?” Then, Peter, emboldened by the Holy Spirit, responded fearlessly. He proclaimed that Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom they crucified, and whom God raised from the dead, made the crippled man well. Peter declared that only the name of Jesus could save people.
As this magnificent declaration shows, the Bible emphasizes the uniqueness of Jesus as the only Savior. Peter and the other apostles never watered down the truth that apart from Jesus there is no salvation for anyone. In fact, they died standing for this truth.
Elsewhere in the Bible, we are told that no one comes to the Father except through Jesus (John 14:6) and that no amount of good works can save us from our sins (Ephesians 2:8-9). Therefore, every Christian affirms that he is saved only on the merit of Christ’s sacrificial death—which leads us to the next core belief.
