4 “Light dawns in the darkness for the upright; he is gracious, merciful, and righteous.”
Psalm 112:4
Every person, whether Christian or not, has their own share of life's trials. But how we respond to such situations is a good test of showing what kind of faith we have.
We can observe at least four ways in which a God-fearing man responds to practical blessings. Yesterday, I gave you one; let me give you another.
Being materially blessed doesn’t mean a God-fearing man will never experience hardship. When in the company of evil men, his uprightness is visible. He doesn’t resort to injustice and crooked ways. He may have bad days; he may get sick, or even lose his riches, but never will he sell his conscience. And during his dark moments, he finds comfort in God and whenever possible, he comforts others.
3 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”
2 Corinthians 1:3-4
His genuine compassion for the weak and oppressed replicates the character of God, making him gracious (kind), merciful (full of compassion), and righteous (Christ-like). Paul is a great example of this characteristic. While in prison, he encouraged the church and continued to train disciples.
In the same way, we too, can suffer affliction. But in the midst of hardship, we can stand out by putting others first before ourselves. Such is a mark of true Christian discipleship.
When we’re facing challenges, we have the choice of being down and weary or serve as a source of encouragement to others. While we need to ensure our personal wellness, we also have to think and act selflessly and care for others. I think that’s when God is most honoured in us and through us.
