40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?”

John 11:40

This verse is taken from the passage where Jesus raises Lazarus and is buried in a cave with a stone laid against it. Jesus asks that the stone be moved. However, Martha, Lazarus’ sister, is worried about the odor since the body has been dead for four days.

Therefore, Jesus reminds Martha that if she believed, she would see the glory of God, i.e., in the form of a miracle. She first has to believe, and then she will see.

What does this verse tell us today?

Trusting Christ allows us to see God’s work in our life.

I believe in the power of prayer. I am convinced with all my heart because the One whom we pray to is the God who can do all things, and there is nothing too hard for Him (Luke 1:37). I believe that the prayer of a true believer is powerful and produces results (James 5:16). I believe in prayer because the Bible tells me that God hears the prayers of His people and promises to listen to their intercessions (Psalm 18:6). I believe in prayer because God answers prayers (Psalm 17:6).

However, the power of prayer does not come from the words I choose or the amount of faith I have; it does not depend on the volume of my voice or how convinced I am about my beliefs either. I believe in the power of prayer, but I ultimately submit to God’s sovereign will. His will be done, not mine. He knows what He’s doing,  and I put my trust in Him. The power of prayer comes from the Almighty Creator whose voice can speak the universe into existence and bring the dead back to life.
